Gestational diabetes starts when a woman's body is not able to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy due to hormonal changes caused by pregnancy. During pregnancy, hormones from the placenta help the baby grow and develop. But these same hormones make it tougher for the woman's body to use insulin, creating insulin resistance.
Gestational diabetes can be rightly described as a condition where the body cells of a pregnant woman develop insulin resistance and fail to use insulin effectively. Even the insulin produced inside the body is low and not sufficiently enough in reducing blood glucose levels, thereby resulting in hyperglycemia or abnormally high glucose levels in the blood.
Keeping the right amount of carbohydrates, proteins and fats keeps the blood sugar level within the normal range that is necessary in gestational diabetes. One serving of carbohydrate food contains about 12 grams of carbohydrate that is necessary to cure gestational diabetes. Vegetables contain only 5grams of carbohydrates per serving.
Again, there are a few disparities. Some authorities consider a previous baby over 8 lbs 5 oz as a risk factor, while others don't count the weight of previous babies unless they are 9 lbs or more. While gestational diabetes can be a cause for high birth weights, it can also cause low birth weight babies. High birth weight babies will often have their blood sugar tested at the hospital to make sure they don't suddenly drop to a low level.
Whenever presence of gestational diabetes is confirmed by the doctor, it is important to take immediate steps to control it. Failure to do so could result in several major complications in the fetus such as macrosomia, jaundice, respiratory distress syndrome, congenital hypoglycemia or might die during pregnancy.
After checking the normal sugar count, she is given a sugar drink and after 2 hours the sugar level test is redone to assess abnormality in blood sugar level. If the women's sugar level is below 140 mg/dl then she is certified to be in the safe limit. However, if the sugar count is more than 140 mg/dl, she is diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
In this test, pregnant woman is made to drink a solution of glucola that contains 50g of glucose. As the glucose is absorbed rapidly into the system, it causes an increase in blood glucose levels. After 60 minutes, blood sample is drawn from the patient and the samples are analyzed. A case of gestational diabetes is suspected if the glucose levels are above 130-140mg/dL. In this case, patient need not undergo any fasting.
